The Church of England, Faith in the City and Racial Justice: addressing growing social polarisation

Guy Hewitt

In this Temple Tract, Guy Hewitt, the inaugural director of racial justice in the Church of England, reflects on a roundtable on Faith in the City 40 Years On, organised by the William Temple Foundation.

He produced and submitted this piece to affirm the continued relevance of the thinking of William Temple and the seminal role of Faith in the City in speaking to matters of race and racial justice. More importantly, however, it foretells the adverse consequences that the neoliberal dictum of individual responsibility could have for society, particularly exacerbating polarisation and division in our nation. This Tract was written in the hope that it advances the discourse on the role of the Church in society and the legacy of Faith in the City in helping to address the growing polarisation particularly around issues of belonging, inclusion, and racial injustice.

In Radical Disciple readers will be introduced to John Vincent’s work by way of those who knew him best: students, friends, and colleagues. Each tells a story or offers a kind of testament, “warts and all? as John would put it. In John Vincent's thinking, this is a “serious kind of book”—it relays the facts without missing “the many-splendoured thing.” So, along with the facts, readers will find the dramatic, amusing, serious, and anecdotal. Most importantly, they will find a living testament to John Vincent's vision of radical urban

theology and discipleship.
